We are focused on providing gold standard rehabilitation care to your pet.

Originally established in 2020 as a canine conditioning and fitness business separate to KJ's rehabilitation work, it then evolved into an online virtual coaching business during the pandemic. Finally with recognition within Canada of KJ's international qualifications in Veterinary Physiotherapy it was able to grow into the full rehabilitation business serving the Maritimes, that it is today!

Our aim is to provide rehabilitation care that complements and enhances your regular and other holistic veterinary treatments. Providing the best chance of recovery and the ability for your pet to live a full and happy life whatever their condition.

In order to provide treatment we require a referral from your veterinarian and we are proud to be work closely with them and if you have one your holistic vet. This helps us provide individual customized care utilizing knowledge gained in over 15 years in the veterinary industry.

Hi, I'm
Kirsty-Jane Powell-Palmer
PgDip Vet. Physio, BSc(hons) Vet. Nurse,  CCFT

Hi I’m KJ the owner of Fur Ability. I moved to Nova Scotia in 2017 from the UK. Me and my family are loving living here with it's friendly people and greater outdoor focus.

I graduated Napier University in Edinburgh in 2007 with a BSc (hons) in Veterinary Nursing and have worked as a veterinary nurse in many clinics and roles. During this I found a desire to go further in helping my patients recovery going beyond what conventional veterinary medicine was able to offer, improving recovery times, reducing pain and reliance on medications alone and I had special interest in injury prevention that stemmed from my participation in canine agility.

This led me to study rehabilitation through the newly recognized Postgraduate Diploma in Veterinary Physiotherapy at Harper Adams University, UK. After graduating I ran a mobile business providing rehabilitation in clients homes. In 2016 I also qualified as a Certified Canine Fitness Trainer (CCFT) through the University of Tennessee. This provided new ideas and ways of implementing conditioning, injury prevention and pre-hab into patient care.

After moving to Nova Scotia, I worked as a Veterinary Rehabilitation Technician in a integrated care clinic. This work allowed me to meet many wonderful clients and patients as well as work with some amazing specialized Veterinarians. It provided a great insight into how holistic veterinary care really works together to heal the patient.

My international postgraduate diploma in Veterinary Physiotherapy has now been recognized and accepted by the veterinary association. This allows me to provide rehabilitation, with my own autonomy via referral from your regular veterinarian. This recognition alongside the pandemic and combined with personal illness led me to looking for a fresh start. This was the start of the idea of Fur Ability as a rehabilitation service utilizing my unique skill set to provide high quality rehabilitation care to my patients and clients.

I am also an international member of The National Association on Veterinary Physiotherapists (NAVP) and carry full liability indemnity insurance. So you can rest assured your pet is getting up to date, gold standard care.
